Entangled Threads

The works in this section evolved from a group exhibition entitled 'Entangled Threads' - a conglomeration of textile artists working in different media. As a weaver I am bound by straight lines - the warp runs back to front, the weft runs left to right and creating a tangle with these threads is a challenge.

Working in multiple layer weaves  offers the opportunity to mix the threads up - in most of the following art works there are at least eight layers of weave woven on a single warp - plenty of opportunity for entanglement!

Captain Jack's Legacy

This series was inspired by the tin mines and decaying engine houses that remain part of the Cornish landscape. These iconic buildings are a memorial to the industrial past, a way of life for so many people which is now redundant.

Whilst they soar upwards into the sky, the oppressive nature of the mines cannot be denied. Woven in paper yarn, rusting wire and metals scraps - these pieces may continue to gently rust and decay over time as do the buildings they represent.

The Beauty of Covid - Nature's Revenge

This piece of work was inspired by the Covid pandemic - a book woven on one continuous warp, with each page telling an aspect of the times in which we lived out the experiences associated with lockdown and lack of communication.

How stories are told and the making of books has started to fascinate me. Read more about this!
