October
Another busy month coming up...

So another new month - and another new weave. Thinking about the exhibition in November and wondering about further new weaves to make for it - do I want to do something like this with little pockets of conversations? This weave is too loose and I don't like the contrasting white yarn - it interferes with the writing. Maybe try something a bit tighter.

02.10.25
An idea for the exhibition in November - a pocket of conversation - can I weave this as a small fold book? So what size would work - A6 options?
Getting the paper weave really neat is difficult - it is so stretchy and then when I try and bend it it springs back, so my selvedges are rubbish in this.

03.10.25
The very messy ends of this warp - there is something about the contrast of the black and the brown colour of the jute that I find immensely pleasing - even in the unfinished and chaotic piece of weave that I have here.

04.10.25
Success or not - this didn’t work out the way that I wanted or expected it to - but putting it into the daily weaves, I can manipulate it to give a much more interesting effect.
The fine paper yarn isn’t really strong enough to hold it’s shape in anything too big - this is A6 and it flops over when I try and stand it up.
But I love the effect of the shadows adding to all the different densities of the black yarn.

Setting off to Slovenia to see my son and his family - looking at the runways, and straight tracks that are produced by the wheels on the tarmac.

06.10.25
So what is this weave about? Just feeling a bit ragged around the edges after the long day of travelling yesterday.

07.10.25
Is this just another weave? Building on the weave of a couple of days ago, playing with floats.

08.10.25
Wondrous weaving -I have a limited colour palette with me, and so I am having to explore what I can do with it.

09.10.25
We’re staying in a very rural hamlet with lots of wooden buildings, numbers of barns and lots of rustic tools all around. There is something about the apparent chaos and mess - I am sure that the owners of the stuff know exactly what is going on.

10.10.25
Everything seems very natural - lots of wood stored up ready for winter.

11.10.25
I love these seed pods - goodness knows how I managed to get them back from the walk intact, let alone back to the UK. Pack them gently and well.

12.10.25
And another version of the seed pods, with a darker background. They stand out better on this weave.

13.10.25
Hiking up into the mountains and struck by so many different varieties of green that there are in the trees - Autumn hasn’t quite made it here yet!

14.10.25
A bit of a lacy effect here - playing with leaving gaps between the weft weaves.

15.10.25
A bit more lacy effect - not sure how this works - but it is the weave for today.

16.10.25
I love this paper chenille yarn - this one I have dyed in some coffee to take the bright white away. I like how the coffee has become more intense in certain areas. Mixing this with quite a thick wool weft is an interesting contrast in textures.

17.10.25
This weave in the Jute has created a basket woven look - what a nightmare to weave with as it sheds it’s fibres everywhere.

18.10.25
Again, a looser look with the jute yarn. On the loom the weft created a really sharp diagonal - but of course as soon as that tension is released it sags and changes shape. Hey-ho.

19.10.25
Back to my donated wool yarns - and just another weave

20.10.25
So often I sit down with these little weaves, with no idea of what is going to come out of it, and as soon as I have woven the first pic an idea comes. And this was todays!

21.10.25
On this weave I have done a two colour warp -I don’t think I have done that before on this little loom but I like the subtle effect it has on the black yarn, which is then emphasised by the few weft stripes.

22.10.25
And a variation on the same theme - have I finally found a way of making this yellow work for me?

23.10.25
I love this fiery bright red - maybe it is such a contrast to the neutral browns, creams and blacks that I am weaving with ifor the exhibition but this really works. The red is muted by having three different shades, and I like the looseness of it. What could I do with this in a big piece? It might make an interesting scarf?

24.10.25
Again, I am enjoying the mottled effect of three different shades. I guess it is not dissimilar to the effect that I get when I hand dye yarns ‘badly’ so that they have a variegated effect.

25.10.25
Playing around with floats - even though these colours aren’t my favourite, I like the effect of this weave.

26.10.25
Reverse colourway to the last one - but I don’t like this one. There isn’t the detail of the previous weave which adds interest and is more appealing.

27.10.25
This one didn’t come out as I expected it to - I think I lost my way with weaving it - but it is another weave!

28.10.25
Scrolling through my photos today, and this one was inspired by a weave that I had seen in the house of a friend of mine. Amazing how the poor beating shows up so much more clearly in the photograph!

29.10.25
Another really loose weave - I am really liking the effect of these - I am not sure why. Is it partly because they are quick to weave at a time when I am really busy and swamped with other work?

30.10.25
I wouldn’t necessarily think that the black and brown colour combination would work well - but it does. A simple weave - trying to change the beat pattern but it doesn’t come out too clearly in this weave.

31.10.25
And October is done…I’m looking forward to getting back on the loom and doing some more weaves there.
And also starting to think about what I want to do with all of these weaves at the end of the year. Looking again at Jessie Mordine Young for inspiration.
