And the year is racing away. Doing these daily weaves makes me more aware of it - or certainly each new month has an impact.
Todays weave is using some paper that I have found that contains 30% seaweed - Norpla. Paper is such an environmental disaster - not only the trees that are cut down but the amount of water that it takes to process it. This Norpla uses significantly less of of both, and seaweed is a much more sustainable and abundant product. Although I wonder, if it becomes used on a big scale what effect that will have on marine life. Thinking about the seagrass projects here in Falmouth, and wondering about farming of seaweed. There is never a simple answer.
So my response is to do what I can - and use up all the offcuts from my current project to eliminate whatever waste I can.

And another weave using more offcuts - this time also using the paper that I have dyed with coffee. The dye softens some of the seaweed marks (I assume that they are from the seaweed) which I prefer, and certainly when I have printed onto the paper it makes it easier to read.
I am enjoying the slight irregularities to the weave that the different thicknesses of paper offer.

Back to the woolen yarns - simple in colour and concept.
Space and density - the contrast is interesting and hopefully I get this in the multiple layers that I am weaving on the big loom.
The neutral colours keep the focus on the weave and the design I think - there is nothing to distract the eye.

Just a weave today - staying with the simple, neutral colours but the changes in colour are what I focus on. Do we want too many visual disturbances - thinking about what this would have looked like if I had added other design elements in, such as the gaps in yesterday’s weave - it would not have been restful. However this weave doesn’t allow any space for curiosity - in yesterday’s weave I find myself wanting to look through it, see what is round the back - I have no desire to do this with this weave. It is what it is.

Loving this sari silk weave with jute/wool warp.
The threads in the sari silk give a great texture, and the colour variations in the weft yarn provide lots of visual interest without becoming too distracting.

Using up scraps of paper from the big weave….there is a tiny bit of orange in the alternate wefts of this weave - it is quite subtle given the colour due to the fine nature of the yarn compared with the paper strips.

Using the dyed seaweed paper in thicker strips, with the contrast of the warp threads.

Using some new raffia that I have bought - I thought that I might want to use it in the large weave, but it doesn’t have the qualities that I was looking for. However I like the variation in thickness as it unravels and I weave it.

And this really is the scraps of paper left over from cutting up the printed sections of the seaweed paper that I am using - but makes for an interesting weave.

Back on the frame loom - not the most exciting weave that I have done!
I do these weaves when I have run out of energy and just need to finish them - they need to be fairly quick and simple, thick weft yarns, a scribble sketch.
