And the year is racing away. Doing these daily weaves makes me more aware of it - or certainly each new month has an impact.
Todays weave is using some paper that I have found that contains 30% seaweed - Norpla. Paper is such an environmental disaster - not only the trees that are cut down but the amount of water that it takes to process it. This Norpla uses significantly less of of both, and seaweed is a much more sustainable and abundant product. Although I wonder, if it becomes used on a big scale what effect that will have on marine life. Thinking about the seagrass projects here in Falmouth, and wondering about farming of seaweed. There is never a simple answer.
So my response is to do what I can - and use up all the offcuts from my current project to eliminate whatever waste I can.

02.08.25
And another weave using more offcuts - this time also using the paper that I have dyed with coffee. The dye softens some of the seaweed marks (I assume that they are from the seaweed) which I prefer, and certainly when I have printed onto the paper it makes it easier to read.
I am enjoying the slight irregularities to the weave that the different thicknesses of paper offer.

03.08.25
Back to the woolen yarns - simple in colour and concept.
Space and density - the contrast is interesting and hopefully I get this in the multiple layers that I am weaving on the big loom.
The neutral colours keep the focus on the weave and the design I think - there is nothing to distract the eye.

04.08.25
Just a weave today - staying with the simple, neutral colours but the changes in colour are what I focus on. Do we want too many visual disturbances - thinking about what this would have looked like if I had added other design elements in, such as the gaps in yesterday’s weave - it would not have been restful. However this weave doesn’t allow any space for curiosity - in yesterday’s weave I find myself wanting to look through it, see what is round the back - I have no desire to do this with this weave. It is what it is.

Enjoying the thick chunky yarn of this weft - and playing with some ideas for embellishing and contrasting with it. Nothing remarkable - it is what it is.

06.08.25
And another one - contrast with the bit thick weaves and the finer lighter ones.

09.08.25
Loving this sari silk weave with jute/wool warp.
The threads in the sari silk give a great texture, and the colour variations in the weft yarn provide lots of visual interest without becoming too distracting.

07.08.25
Using up scraps of paper from the big weave….there is a tiny bit of orange in the alternate wefts of this weave - it is quite subtle given the colour due to the fine nature of the yarn compared with the paper strips.

08.08.25
Weaving with my one of my favourite colours - the orange always gives me a bit of a lift.

12.08.25
Using the dyed seaweed paper in thicker strips, with the contrast of the warp threads.

10.08.25
Using some new raffia that I have bought - I thought that I might want to use it in the large weave, but it doesn’t have the qualities that I was looking for. However I like the variation in thickness as it unravels and I weave it.

11.08.25
And this really is the scraps of paper left over from cutting up the printed sections of the seaweed paper that I am using - but makes for an interesting weave.

15.08.25
Not very inspiring - a sort of brick pattern - not really sure what went on here. But I have woven a piece today!

13.08.25
Back on the frame loom - not the most exciting weave that I have done!
I do these weaves when I have run out of energy and just need to finish them - they need to be fairly quick and simple, thick weft yarns, a scribble sketch.

14.08.25
This one started out as just a weave - however I really like the effect that the twill has given - with the multiple weft threads it has spread out the structure and is surprisingly pleasing.

18.08.25
And another remnant one - I think I prefer the one that I did yesterday - that yellow again!

16.08.25
A more regular twill - it is a weave, and I have done what I set out to do!

17.08.25
Picking up lots of remnants of yarn that are scattered around and ends that have been stuffed back into the box, mostly from the various weaves that I am doing for this project. The lighter mauve that I inserted here isn’t a colour that I would normally add to this palette - but I don’t mind it!

21.08.25
My favourite colour, so it’s not surprising that I like this! The repetition of the word is good, and it like the paper that I have written it on - the graininess of the seaweed paper adds texture.

19.08.25
Playing with colour and the paper insert - something very simple about this, but at the same time very appealing.

20.08.25
A variation on a theme - I don’t like the contrast of the writing and the weave - I would prefer it if the weave and the writing were both the same colour.

22.08.25
This one has appeal with the variation in the weave structure - finally I like the yellow!
The smaller stencil that I have used for the lettering means that it has got a bit lost.

So many ‘just a weave’ this month - busy, busy with a big project which is now finished - hopefully I can get a bit more creative with my weaves now that I have a bit more brain space!
